Installing:

download the controller app to one computer.

download the client(s) to different computers – each computer should be running a different client 01,02,03,etc since this defines what ‘feed’ a computer will be. Doesn’t matter where on the computer the client or controller are run from.

Copy media to a known location on  the client such as ~/Movies/test/movie01.mov

This path is what you enter in the controller for feed X path. the files don’t need to be on the controller computer at all. Make sure you are entering the path to the file on the client.

the controller computer and clients will need to be connected to a gigabit ethernet switch. DHCP and internet access are not needed. Wireless IS NOT RECOMMENDED TURN IT OFF YOU WILL HAVE PROBLEMS. If you had wireless turned on it can take up to 5 minutes to clear up – rebooting fixes it faster.

Launch the client – a window for the video should appear and also a window for the client config. if the window opens black – reboot then it should display color bars – and some debug information – it will say no contact from controller – since the controller is not yet running.

on the control computer launch the controller.

A window will appear for the control display and also one for settings.

After a few moments the clients should start to populate the display.

In the settings window enter the path to the movie you placed on the client in the feed path field that matches the feed number of the client.

make sure to press return after typing the path.

after a few moments the client should load the movie, and the progress bar in the controller display should change.

if the client has appeared and everything is working right then pressing the [space] key should start playback.

pressing [space] again should stop playback then press r to reque to 0:00 time.

 spacebar  starts and stops playback.
 lowercase r re-queues to the active queue.
 Uppercase I  marks the in point
 lowercase i recalls the in point
option+ lowercase i clears the in point

 Client launches and the window is black!

If there has been no controller running, and clicking the debug option in the client still leaves a blank black window –  try restarting the client computer – this seems to clear the problem up…

 


common problems:

Video Creeps forward…

The data rate for that codec is too high for the computer – its a combination of data rate, hard disk throughput and RAM.

Other things like the hard disk spinning down can cause that too, so disable all that powersaving stuff.

typically this is only annoying since when it’s actually played it goes on time from the right place.


 

• files don’t load!

Did you include the extension of the file? and press return after typing?

the path to the file is where the file is on the client. so ~/Movies/some.mov tells the client to look in the Movies directory of the currently logged in user.

Currently the controller sets these paths:

for the filter to ~/Movies/filter.qtz

for the green screen file ~/Movies/green.png

so for those files to load, they must be located there and named that.

 

•It doesnt requeue unless it’s paused!

I know maybe that will get better.

 

• it should play sequences of stills.

maybe – or something like a quicktime movie?

 

• it should save setups.

yes, in a future release it will.
